A "firewall" for a battery pack: How aerogel insulation technology is reshaping PACK safety design
In the safety design of lithium battery PACK, thermal runaway spread is the most difficult opponent to deal. After a cell is out of control of heat, the temperature can soar to hundreds of degrees Celsius within a few seconds. If the heat cannot be effectively isolated, adjacent cell will fail in succession like dominoes.
Aerogel heat barrier material is becoming the key solution to this problem. The thermal conductivity of aerogels is the lowest among known solid materials at present. Due to the air proportion of 99%, aerogels are more and more widely used in thermal protection of new energy batteries.. The domestic R & D team has raised the temperature resistance limit of aerogel heat filter from 650 ℃ to 1300 ℃. After being roasted at 1000 ℃ for 5 minutes, heat filter the temperature of the other side can be controlled below 100 ℃.
For PACK factories, the application of aerogel is not as simple as simply sticking a layer of heat filter. The thickness of the insulation layer, the placement position, and the fit method with cell will directly affect the final heat insulation effect and the overall energy density of battery pack. It is too thick to occupy space and increase weight; It is too thin and the heat insulation effect is not up to standard; The placement position is wrong, and the heat may spread from the side or bottom around the heat insulation layer.

Suppliers who can give specific figures are usually more trustworthy than those who can only say "conform to the national standard.
