The inaugural year for semi-solid-state batteries in vehicles: As “transitional technology” becomes a definitive choice, are PACK manufacturers ready?
2026 is regarded as the first year of semi-solid battery loading in the industry. Dongfeng Motor has officially mass-produced 350Wh/kg semi-solid battery in September. It is equipped with major models such as Yipai, which can achieve an energy retention rate of 72% in extremely cold environment at-30 ℃, it supports more than 1,000 kilometers of battery life of the whole vehicle. The industry generally expects that semi-solid-state batteries will take the lead in small-scale loading in 2026, and the head Enterprise is expected to complete small-batch mass production or demonstration loading of all-solid-state batteries in 2027.
However, for most equipment manufacturers, the large-scale mass production of all-solid-state batteries still needs time. Zeng Yuqun, chairman of Ningde era, said publicly that all-solid-state batteries need to be installed on millions of vehicles, with little possibility and only 4 levels of technical maturity at present.
This means that in the next 3 to 5 years, semi-solid batteries will be "a more deterministic transition option", while liquid lithium batteries will remain the main force in most application scenarios.
For PACK factory this brings about a practical problem: the design of battery pack needs to be compatible with different cell systems. Semi-solid battery has advantages in energy density, but its charge-discharge characteristics, temperature response curve, cyclic attenuation mode are different from liquid lithium battery. The SOC estimation model and charge-discharge strategy of BMS need to be adjusted accordingly.
Dongguan Juneng New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. adopts the idea of "one scenario and one strategy" in the design of BMS, with cross-cellPACK system design capability. The company's service scope covers industrial equipment, medical equipment, AGV cargo van and other fields, with an average daily production capacity of more than 70 sets. The flexible manufacturing system can adapt to the switching of different cell systems. For equipment manufacturers who are evaluating the semi-solid battery solution, it is much safer to choose a PACK partner who can quickly complete the system adaptation when the cell system changes than to find a solution when the cell is in place.
